Girl meets boy, everything he does is perfection, and they are madly in love. We have all read stories about boy-crazy teenage girls before. Why tell a story in verse poetry form? Often, when I read a novel written in verse I wonder, if this story was told in prose format, would I care about reading it? Is it a story that has legs of its own without the use of poetry? In this case, I’m not sure. Using short yet emotion packed chapters of poetic verse, Sones creates a portrait of a young girl trying to navigate her emerging hormones through family, friendships, and a series of infatuations. First crushes, first kisses, and more we may not care to think about. What don’t you know about your teenager? This is the fear of every parent, and Sonya Sones gives us an astonishingly honest glimpse inside the mind of Sophie as she navigates the teenage world of firsts. New York: Simon & Schuster for Young Readers, 2001.
